“All right, let’s pack it in,” Oaks said as he put his radio away.

Treadway frowned and looked up the river. A gentle bend in the course prevented them from seeing Taggart’s position, but he could imagine it all the same. Around that bend, there was possibly a squad of Japanese soldiers, and it made him uneasy.

“Gunny…” Treadway began but couldn’t quite find his words.

Oaks looked at the young man, followed his line of sight and then nodded, “Yeah… I don’t like it either. Still, Davie and Hank should already be headed back. Unless the Japs have a boat, they can’t get across, so…”

“I’ve got a bad feeling, Gunny.”

Oaks drew in a breath to try and dissuade the other Raider but stopped. He had the same feeling and out in the bush… in Indian country… a wise man did not ignore his instincts. Not ever.

“C’mon,” said Oaks and started moving.
